Plankton are the foundation of the ocean’s food chain. Phytoplankton are plants and zooplankton, like the creatures pictured in this image, are tiny animals. Even though we can’t see most zooplankton with our naked eyes, they are a critical food source for fish, crustaceans, sea anemones, gray and blue whales and basking sharks.
