Glass sea sponge reefs in BC’s Hecate Strait formed after the last ice age 9,000 years ago. These amazing sponges are living animals that build their skeletons out of silica. Covering hundreds of square kilometers, these fragile reefs provide habitat on the sea floor for a wide range of species, including colourful rockfish, flounder, prawns, nudibranchs and sea stars.
