Commission for the new BC Children's Hospital Teck Acute Care Centre. For this project, I was asked to create a narrative mural that children could focus on and discuss with the doctors and nurses during surgery. Because the children will be awake but heavily medicated during these procedures, it was important to keep the colours bright and the animals happy and non-threatening. I focused on local birds chattering in the trees: woodpeckers, flickers, and little birds like chickadees.
To create the mural, I went for long walks in the forest near my studio, taking photos and making sketches of trees. I then painted the mural at quarter size in my studio. The finished artwork was scanned and printed onto panels installed in the surgery room. These panels will withstand regular cleaning and can be reprinted as needed over their projected 30 year life.
